Sink or Float?

Ages 3-4 Science & Nature

Splash! Eight everyday things - a rubber duck, a hammer, a leaf, a toy boat, an anchor, a rock, a beach ball and a key - and the child colors only the ones that float. The example at the top shows a log floating on the water and a brick sunk to the bottom. No reading for the child: a grown-up reads the line and the example aloud. For grown-ups, the 4 floaters are the duck (top row, 1st), the leaf (top row, 3rd), the boat (top row, 4th) and the beach ball (bottom row, 3rd); the hammer, the anchor, the rock and the key sink. Test it: Fill a bowl with water and try a few real ones together (a real metal key, a rock, a leaf)! Ask: What else in the kitchen do you think would float?
