Count & Tally game

Alive or Not?

Ages 5-6 Science & Nature Animals

We went for a walk in the park! Twelve pictures, and the child finds the ones that are alive: circle each living thing, make one tally mark for every picture in the Alive box or the Not alive box, then write the two totals, which must add up to 12. The tricky ones: a ball, a kite and a bike move but are not alive, and a tree and a flower stay still but are alive. Living things grow, need food, water and air, and make more of their own kind. No reading for the child: a grown-up reads the line and the 3 steps aloud. For grown-ups, the answers: alive (7): the dog, the tree, the frog, the butterfly, the flower, the turtle and the bird; not alive (5): the ball, the kite, the rock, the cup and the bike. Totals: 7 alive + 5 not alive = 12. Ask: Find one thing in this room that is alive and one that is not. How do you know?

Who is this page for?

Ray says: One sentence is plenty. I rewrite the words on this game for them; the pictures stay put for now.
